PORTFOLIO

10-12 of your poems. EACH accompanied by an artist statement as described by the Artist Statement handout.

A major,well written essay, in paragraph form that covers at least all of the following:


  • Describe in detail your own creative/writing process. (ideas, drafting, editing, re-writing, etc.)
  • What inspires you and why?
  • When and where do you tend to write poetry and why?
  • What do you enjoy about writing poetry AND poetry in general?
  • What do you least enjoy about writing poetry AND poetry in general?
  • What are your strengths as a poet and why?
  • What sort of poetry do you tend to enjoy and why?
  • How would you describe your own style and why?
  • What do you wish to improve about your poetry writing and why?
  • What is your overall opinion of your own poetry and why?


Point Breakdown:


Major Essay: 20 points

Poems and Artists statements: 30 points


Errors in Spelling, Grammar, Usage and Conventions will count against your point totals!!!

Artist Statements for each Poem

One for each of the ten - twelve poems in your portfolio.


An explanation, typed (12 pt Times or Times New Roman), in paragraph form, which covers and explains at least all of the following:

-Theme/Subject matter: What is it about? What are you trying to say and why?

-Symbolism and imagery: deeper meaning (if any)

-Why you wrote it/What inspired you

-What you like about it and what you want to improve (if anything)


Each Statement should appear immediately following the poem it describes. It can be on the same page or a following page.


Each Statement should be titled with the format of, “Poem Title Statement”


Spelling and grammar will be graded. The tone should be formal. You may write in first person.
